Wish Upon a Song by Geelong Lyric Theatre Society in Geelong, Victoria (Australia)

What To Know About This Production

The Geelong Lyric Theatre Society (GLTS) is a community-based theatre company with a well-established reputation for presenting high quality and affordable Musical Theatre. The GLTS has been established for over 40 years. We aim to provide an accessible creative platform for both established and developing creatives and performers in our local region, which includes providing opportunities for first timers and experts alike. Traditionally, we have presented two full scale musical productions each year. We are more recently scaling back on our production output and opening-up our options to also incorporate smaller productions in alternate theatre spaces.

In keeping true to our Community Values we also intend to continue providing opportunities for a wide range of performers and creatives to participate in our productions. To this end, we are creating and staging ‘Wish Upon A Song”, a concert production celebrating some of the most well loved music of Disney. The program will consist of approximately 25 musical numbers over 2 Acts. It will not only provide for a sizeable cast of soloists and ensemble, but also feature an auditioned youth symphony orchestra on stage. Geelong Lyric are also thrilled to be partnering with the Geelong Youth Choir for this production. Both senior and junior choirs will join cast and orchestra on stage to ensure a spectacular concert experience for our audiences in May. Geelong Lyric are proud to be building this show from the ground up, including original orchestrations by Musical Director, Brad Treloar!

We are looking to cast up to 40 performers, including approximately a dozen under 16 years of age (age 10 and above).

The Geelong Lyric Theatre Society have staged many wonderful productions in Geelong over our 40-year history and some of our most recent productions include:

The Last 5 Years – 2019

·      The award winning “Song Contest – The Almost Eurovision Experience”

·       Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

·      The Wizard of Oz

·      Legally Blonde

Dance Audition Note

If dancing is not your cup of tea - fear not! The dance auditions will allow the creative team flexibility with casting and the information needed to better match performers to numbers. For example, some numbers will require strong dancers while others will call for little to no dance experience. The Directors and Choreographer are taking a team approach to casting. You may expect, if cast, to perform in various numbers, ranging from solo or feature vocalist to ensemble singer/dancer. Therefore, you may at the very least be required to perform some choreography or choreographed movement as part of your various roles.

VOCAL AUDITIONS INFORMATION

You are asked to choose a Disney song to perform for your vocal audition. We also recommend you choose a song that sits comfortably in your range. It should also show off the quality of your voice, in its best tonal setting and show that you can connect with the lyrical content of the piece.

Have as much fun with your song as possible. For example, if you play a musical instrument and can accompany yourself or add something surprising - go for it!! It is important to note, there is scope for the final program to be adjusted according to the abilities individuals bring to the cast.

Please Note:- It will not be necessary to sing the whole song at the audition so please choose the section that will showcase the range and quality of your voice.

Sheet music only please. No recordings or backing tracks. If page turns are required, it is best to place your sheet music in a plastic sleeve folder or display book. Please ensure your music is in the correct key. We will not be transposing, so make sure you have checked it is accurate prior to your audition.

Available Roles

Unlike a scripted Musical Theatre production, 'Wish Upon A Song' is in concert format and therefore does not offer 'character' roles in a traditional sense. Also, the musical numbers do not exist within a 'dramatic context'. ie - are not part of telling a scripted story. Instead of character roles, 20 of the 25 songs/movies featured in our program are listed here so you can appreciate the range of numbers and scope of performers required. You can reference song preferences rather than 'role' preferences on your audition form.
