Grease by Albany Light Opera and Theatre Company in Albany, Western Australia

What To Know About This Production

A wop bop a lu mop a wop bam boom! Grease is the Word for ALOTCo in 2023!

If you've loved Grease since you first saw it on the big screen or fell in love with one of the stage revivals ... Throw your mittens around your kittens and away we go ….

Persons 16+ are welcome to audition but the creative team is comfortable casting 'mature' talent to ensure each character shines.

At times crass, tough, vulnerable, lusty, and romantic, Grease the musical follows ten working class teens as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, personal values and love. It's not all about Sandy and Danny. The focus of this production will be developing a strong ensemble performance that takes the audience back to gritty roots of Grease before the highly polished, but beloved film and arena spectacular versions.

What To Expect At Auditions

Please read the Audition Information carefully.

Key Dates

Information Night 6:30pm Wednesday 14 June 2023

Auditions 24 & 25 June 2023 – by registration

Rehearsals 6-9pm Tuesday and Thursday (Saturdays as required) from 18 July

Grease contains mature themes, strong language and for some characters, intimacy, and rough-housing, appropriate to the plot. This should be considered before you commit to audition or volunteering as part of the band or production crew.

Persons aged 16+ are welcome to audition. (Persons under 16 years may be considered at the discretion of the creative team – please email fiona.kuiper@gmail.com). The creative team is comfortable casting 'mature' talent to ensure each character shines. Any under 18 cast will be required to provide parental consent and contact details following a successful audition.

All members of cast and crew are required to be financial members of Albany Light Opera & Theatre Company (ALOTCo). You will be required at all rehearsals unless otherwise advised via the rehearsal schedule which may also be amended to ensure a high standard performance.

Working with Children Checks – should any persons under 18-year-old be cast, Working with Children Checks will be required of all creative team members and may be required for adult cast members by direction of the ALOTCo Committee.

ALOTCo conducts closed auditions – once your audition is complete you will be required to leave or wait outside if you are carpooling. Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your booked arrival time. You will be taken through to audition one at a time. Please allow up to one hour. Each audition is allocated up to 15 minutes. Warm up prior to arriving. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes you are comfortable dancing in. Bring plenty of water. Please do not bring children or pets. Please do not come in a costume.

Auditions are only bookable via Cast98.

Auditions will comprise dance, singing and lines (lines may not be required for Ensemble only auditions). Audition slots will be available Saturday (full day) and Sunday morning with Sunday afternoon reserved for call backs. If you are auditioning for a character part, you need to be available for potential call back Sunday afternoon.

The audition dance routines are available as videos on the ALOTCo website. Those Magic Changes is dance only and does not require singing. We Go Together requires the Rama Lama lines chanted while dancing.

Lines are available on the ALOTCo website. Lines are for characters only but the panel may request alternate lines be read.

Please prepare the song listed for your character of choice. If you are auditioning for multiple characters you should audition with the song that best showcases your voice.

If you are auditioning for Ensemble only - prepare the ensemble songs only.

Please note: If you are auditioning for one of the Pink Ladies, you will need to demonstrate your ability to harmonise during your audition - Freddy My Love harmonies are Sop and Sop 2.

All music files of the required audition songs will be provided, and the partial sections of the music score (not full songs) are available on the ALOTCo website. Audition will be with piano accompaniment.

Auditionees are not to provide their own backing or alternate songs. Musical Directors may request scales to determine vocal range.

Audition time is limited. You may not get to sing through the whole audition song or selection of lines. This does not mean you will be discounted; the panel is experienced with auditions and can judge quickly.

Casting is expected to occur promptly. Public announcements will not be made until auditionees have been advised of audition outcome. Feedback on auditions will be provided on request.

 Please note

·      Once casting is announced no further discussion on audition panel’s choices will take place

·      If we need to search further for the appropriate lead / minor, we will do so

·      Auditioning does not guarantee a placement within the cast

Cast List For Grease

The cast list is posted! Please login to access cast-only resources.

Available Roles

  • Sandy Dumbrowski - Danny’s love interest. She is sweet, wholesome, naïve, and cute, like Sandra Dee of the Gidget movies. Sandy struggles with wanting more than her Sandra Dee image. VOCAL RANGE: Soprano with high belt
  • Danny Zuko - The leader of the T-Birds. He is charismatic and confident, with a sense of easy-going charm. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
  • Betty Rizzo - Leader of the Pink Ladies. She is tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo Soprano
  • Kenickie - Second-in-command of the T-Birds. Tough looking, tattooed, surly, avoids any show of softness. Has an off-beat sense of humour. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone
  • Frenchie - A dreamer. Good natured and dumb. Heavily made up, fussy about her appearance - particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician. VOCAL RANGE: Alto; limited solo singing
  • Doody - Youngest of the guys. Small, boyish, open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshipping attitude toward the other guys. Plays guitar onstage. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
  • Marty - The “beauty” of the Pink Ladies. Looks older than the other girls but betrays her age when she opens her mouth. Tries to act sophisticated. VOCAL RANGE: Alto
  • Sonny Latierri - An Italian-looking guy, with shiny black hair and dark, oily skin. He is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady-killer but is completely tone deaf to most people around him. VOCAL RANGE: Baritone; No solo singing
  • Jan - A compulsive eater. Jan is loud and pushy with the girls, but shy and uncomfortable with boys. VOCAL RANGE: Mezzo Soprano
  • Roger - The anything-for-a-laugh stocky type. Full of mischief, half-baked schemes and ideas. A clown who enjoys putting other people on. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
  • Miss Lynch - Old Maid English teacher VOCAL RANGE: Ensemble Part – Flexible
  • Patty Simcox - A typical cheerleader. She is aggressive, sure of herself and given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. Catty, but in an All-American girl sort of way unpopular with the Pink Ladies. Patty is a strong mover who can twirl a baton. VOCAL RANGE: Alto
  • Cha Cha De Gregorio - A blind date. Slovenly, loud-mouthed, and homely. Cha-Cha takes pride in being the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s. VOCAL RANGE: Ensemble Part – Flexible
  • Eugene Florczyk - The class valedictorian. Physically and socially awkward, with weak eyes and a high-pitched voice. An apple-polisher, smug, and pompous but gullible. VOCAL RANGE: Ensemble Part – Flexible
  • Johnny Casino - A veteran greaser and former student at Rydell. A local rock ‘n’ roll icon in the making. VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
  • Vince Fontaine - A typical “teen audience” radio disc jockey. Slick, egotistical, fast talking. A veteran ‘greaser’. VOCAL RANGE: Ensemble Part – Flexible
  • Teen Angel - A good-looking, falsetto-voiced, Fabian-look-alike. A singer who would have caused girls to scream and riot in 1958. (A female Teen Angel may be considered) VOCAL RANGE: Tenor
  • Blanche - Miss Lynch's offsider, adult cameo no solo
