The Little Mermaid by Burnie Musical Society in Burnie, Tasmania

What To Know About This Production

Journey "under the sea" with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney's The Little Mermaid JR., adapted from Disney's Broadway production and the motion picture (featuring the enormously popular Academy Award-winning music and delightfully charming book and lyrics). Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories, Disney's The Little Mermaid JR. is an enchanting look at the sacrifices we all make for love and acceptance.

In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home — and her fins — behind and live in the world above. But first, she'll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she's the girl whose enchanting voice he's been seeking.

Auditions For The Little Mermaid

What To Expect At Auditions

Hello, and thank you for your interest in our show ‘The Little Mermaid Jr’. This booklet contains all the information you will need to audition and be part of the production. It has been 30 years since the original release of the Disney classic animation and I hope that you love as much as I do. I am very excited about the opportunity to direct and hope you will also find this a challenging, yet rewarding process to part of. Director – Andrea Hardy

PLEASE NOTE!! We have had an issue with multiple times being booked and not being able to free those extra time slots up, but we’ve had to add more audition times as we’ve had more interest than we expected, which is fantastic.

We have added more times on Friday afternoon, starting from 5.00 on Friday and on Saturday starting from 9.30. If necessary, we will add more times on Sunday morning, once Friday and Saturday are looking almost full. Auditions on SUNDAY MORNING will be at LEIGHLANDS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (Burnie Campus) not at the Baptist Church.

If you have tried to book an audition time and were not able to, please CALL Emma White on 0439 908 040. Please call after business hours.

Even though you have filled in the online audition form, you will still need to book a time to guarantee an audition.

If you were able to book a time online and Emma has not spoken to you, then your time is set.

Essential Requirements

To audition for ‘The Little Mermaid Jr’ you must be: • Minimum age: Grade three and older. This will include four ‘School Performances’ during school hours. • Available for rehearsals on a Sunday afternoon (everyone) and Wednesday afternoon (solo cast roles and featured ensembles) • A member of the Burnie Musical Society, for insurance purposes. Current membership prices are: Children $15, Adults $30 Families $50. This can paid after you have secured a role in the production • Be committed and focused in both rehearsals and performances with a great attitude!

Auditions

Auditions will be held on Friday 2nd August and Saturday 3rd August. Callbacks will be held on Sunday 4th August at The BURNIE BAPTIST CHURCH HALL.

Auditions provide an opportunity for you to show the directors on the audition panel what you can do so they can find a role within the production that best suits your skills and abilities. They want you to perform your best, so try not to worry too much about it, to ensure you are not too concerned or nervous when you perform. We have all been in your position and understand how scary it might seem and will be encouraging and supportive of you.

Auditions are divided into three parts: Singing, Acting and Movement.

Singing: • If you are auditioning for a solo singing role, you will need to prepare a song for your audition. This should be sung from memory. • You only need to prepare 30 seconds of a song, at maximum: one verse and one chorus. You should choose the best part of your song, and possibly sing it in the style of the character you are auditioning for. • Bring either a backing track on a CD or iPod or some sheet music for our pianist to play for you. • If you are auditioning for a chorus or non-singing role, you can prepare the above or be prepared to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the panel. Please note, if you audition and choose to only sing ‘Happy Birthday’ you will not be offered a solo singing role. • You may be asked to do a vocal range test. This involves the pianist playing notes on a piano and asking you to sing them as they gradually get higher or lower.

Acting: • If you are auditioning for a speaking role, you will need to prepare one or two of the attached Audition Pieces, depending on which roles you are auditioning for. These do not need to be from memory, but should have been rehearsed. • If you do not want a speaking role, you will not need to complete this part.

Movement: • As many of the characters in the show (including chorus) are not human, but various creatures, you will be required to show us how you would move as that character. This may be included as part of the acting part above. • If you are not auditioning for a specific speaking creature, please prepare to show us some moves as a sea creature of your choice, such as an octopus, crab, fish or eel etc. • You may also be asked to complete a basic 16-count piece of choreography that you will be shown during your audition. • If you are a dancer and would like to take on some more complex dancing in the production (and possibly to assist with the choreography – making up the dances), please demonstrate a 30 second routine.

Special Skills: • If you have any special skills that might be useful in the production, please be prepared to demonstrate them in the audition. These could include skating on skates, scooters or roller shoes, tumbling or other gymnastic skills, walking on stilts or other circus tricks etc.

Important to Remember: • You need to arrive before your audition is due to start and be ready to go. Audition time slots are very short and you will not have time in the audition to warm-up or put on special shoes etc. • Be prepared to wait. While we make every effort to run on time, we also try to give every auditionee the opportunity to show us their full potential. This can mean we start running late, however it is important that you stay focused and ready for when it is your turn. • Have your audition form already filled in before you arrive. • Go big! You have one opportunity to give us your best performance, so go for it and give it everything! • Have fun! If nothing else you will have gained a valuable experience.

PARENTS: Portions of your child’s audition may be filmed to assist us in our casting decisions. These will be deleted once casting is finalised. If you do not wish for this to happen, please indicate on your child’s audition form or at arrival at the audition.
