About North Queensland Opera And Music Theatre

Who are we?

NQOMT is an enthusiastic not-for-profit organisation which welcomes people from all walks of life to enjoy our passion for music and theatre.

History

North Queensland Opera & Music Theatre was formed originally as NQMT in 1980 by a small group of people who wanted to present contemporary theatre to the Townsville community. Our first musical, Man of La Mancha, was directed by founding member Bill Munro in 1981. A couple of years later the word Opera was added to our name. The early years were challenging for our fledgling company. NQOMT was continually on the move from church halls to schools & warehouses: with the storage of sets and props scattered throughout the city and a committee always scraping to make ends meet. On the 21st February 1994, NQOMT was incorporated and in 1996 we purchased our own home at Gill Park. Thanks to the generous assistance from the Queensland Government & the Townsville City Council, with the determination of a hard-working committee our future was secure. Over 40 years & an enormous number of musical performances later, NQOMT has developed a proud history and has been at the forefront in presenting contemporary theatre to the North.
